After two-plus years of not playing a game, the San Francisco Glens scored a 2-0 victory over Golden State Force SC thanks to Glens academy product Diego Grande at Skyline College.
“The boys stepped up, and I could tell right way there was good chemistry and good communication,” said Glens first year head coach Gabe Saucedo. “We played with a purpose, and the shutout had a lot to do not just with what we did defensively, but also in attack.”
The Glens got on the scoreboard in the 34th minute thanks to a cross from Julio Gonzalez Ponce that Grande headed home.
In the second half, Force SC tried to equalize the game but SF keeper Hugo Dutour saved three shots.
Then in the 91st minute Grande scored his second of the game to clich the victory.
“We challenged the guys at halftime to manage the game, and you were excellent,” added Glens Technical Director Jimmy Conrad. “We didn’t give them room to breathe, and we set the foundation for how we want to play the rest of the season.”
Next up for the Glens is a game against Marin FC Legends on Saturday at 3 pm at Skyline College.
Two PK’s help Project 51O defeat SF City FC
San Francisco’s other USL League 2 team also played their first game in two-plus years but fell to Project 51O by a 2-0 scoreline.
51O’s Gabriel Bracken Serra converted a penalty kick in the 34th minute to give the East Bay side the lead going into the break.
With SF City looking to equalize, the visitors were called for another penalty just before the game ended. 51O missed the pk, but Javier Ruiz Duran was first to the rebound and slotted the ball in for the final scoreline.
Next up for SF City is Fresno Fuego FC at Kezar Stadium at 7 pm. Then Fuego travels to Oakland to take on Project 51O on Sunday May 22 at 3 pm at Merritt College.
