Stanford and Cal suffered setbacks in Southern California while Santa Clara pulled into a first-place tie in the West Coast Conference. St. Mary’s was edged out by Gonzaga, USF fell to Pepperdine, and San Jose State ends season on a loss.

Stanford loses to UCLA and USC

After a six-game unbeaten stretch moved the Cardinals into the top ten national rankings, Stanford (12-5-1, 6-3-1 Pac-12) suffered a problematic trip to Southern California. They lost both of their games to fellow top ten sides UCLA and USC.

Last Thursday, UCLA’s Maricarmen Reyes scored in the 86th minute to defeat Stanford 1-0.

On Sunday, the Cardinal jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind a USC own goal and Naomi Girma’s strick right before the half.

However, USC came out storming and scored three unanswered goals to send the Cardinals to back-to-back defeats.

Stanford completes the regular season with a game at home against Cal on Nov. 6th.

Santa Clara move into WCC first place tie

The 25th ranked Broncos (9-5-2, 6-1 WCC) continued their excellent run of form in the West Coast Conference by knocking off Number 11 BYU 1-0 last Saturday.

Kelsey Turnbow scored in the 74th minute and keeper Kylie Foutch made some excellent saves to tie the Cougars in the standings.

Santa Clara plays Loyola Marymount at home on Wednesday and then travels to face Saint Mary’s in the final game of the regular season.

St. Mary’s edged out by Gonzaga

The Gaels (9-2-4, 3-1-2 WCC) strong season hit a speed bump when they fell to Gonzaga at home last weekend.

St. Mary’s outshot the Zagas 12-7, but a goal by Marissa Garcia was all the visitors needed to claim the victory.

Next up for the Gaels is a trip to San Diego before finishing their season against Santa Clara in Moraga.

Cal loses tight game to UCLA

The Bears (8-6-3, 4-5-1 Pac-12) conceded a goal in the second overtime to fall to fifth-ranked UCLA on Sunday. UCLA’s Mia Fishel scored in the 104th minute to take the tie away from Cal. Berkeley also lost last Thursday to 10th ranked USC 2-0.

Cal next travels to Stanford to play their archrivals on Saturday to finish the regular season.

USF fall to Pepperdine

The University of San Francisco Dons (6-8-2, 2-5-0 WCC) continued to fight for results in the WCC but fell to 13th ranked Pepperdine over the weekend 4-1. Samantha Curwood-Wagner scored the lone goal for USF.

The Dons will have to win their final two games to finish the season at the .500 mark. First up is a trip to Gonzaga on Wednesday before playing San Diego at home on Saturday.

San Jose State finish season with a loss

The Spartans (7-11-1, 4-6-1 Mountain West) finished their season with a tough loss to Fresno State last Thursday, 3-1.

San Jose finished the season with three losses, all on the road. Sophomore Jaiden McClellan scored in the game’s final minute, one of eleven Spartans that scored this season.
