NPSL: FC Davis tops standings

After winning their first two matches of the season, El Farolito looked overmatched in a 5-1 loss to FC Davis at Crocker Amazon Park in San Francisco. Davis’ defensive pressure frustrated Farolito’s front-line, and their attackers were relentless in finding gaps in Farolito’s defense. The man of the match for Farolito was goalkeeper Jonathan Barona, who made several excellent saves in the first half and early in the second half to keep his club in the match. Davis’s Justin Wright scored the only goal of the first half on a perfectly placed strike from 15 yards out. Titus Washington earned a second-half hat trick on goals in the 51st, 54th, and 74th minute, while Jonathan Sanchez added another in the 70th minute. Ulises Tavares scored for Farolito.

Davis is now alone atop the division standings after Academica SC lost to the Sacramento Gold by a score of 2-1. Academica jumped into the lead on Jorge Carmona’s 20th-minute goal, but Sacramento’s Dominic Vegaalban earned a brace with goals in the 39th minute to tie the match and in the 90th minute to earn the full three points for the Gold.

Contra Costa FC earned its second consecutive win with a 3-0 victory over the Oakland Stompers. Contra Costa jumped out in front in the 5th minute thanks to a Stompers’ own goal. Eliezer Paul-Gindiri added another in the 27th minute and John Quintanilla wrapped up the scoring in the 42nd minute.

Napa Valley 1839 FC won this season’s Wine Country Derby with a 3-2 win over Sonoma County Sol FC. Sonoma’s Sebastian Santos opened the scoring in the 16th minute, on an assist by Oliver Ziemer. Napa grabbed the lead before halftime thanks to Salvador Gomez; Gerardo Mendoza converted a cross from Gomez after a scramble in the box in the 26th minute, and Dario Pavon headed home Gomez’s corner kick 9 minutes later. Napa extended its lead in the 62nd minute when Sol defender Miles Monroe was red-carded for an intentional handball and Luis Ramirez converted the subsequent penalty kick. When Maurilio Lopez was also red-carded a few minutes later, Sonoma’s chances seemed dim, but Santos converted a penalty kick in the 83rd minute and he nearly scored the equalizer in the waning moments of the match, but his shot sailed over the crossbar.
