Looking to add some attacking firepower to a forward line in need of goals, the Oakland Roots announced the singing of former MLS player Dom Dwyer to their roster on Thursday.

Dwyer had a ten year professional career in MLS plying his trade, scoring 85 goals in 231 regular season games. His most productive season was in 2014 when he scored 22 goals for Sporting Kansas City. Next he moved to Orlando City where injuries slowed down his offensive output. He then signed for Toronto FC and Atlanta United.

It’s not the first time Dwyer has played in the USL. In 2013, he played on loan from KC for Orlando City when they were still in the second division and scored 15 goals in 13 league games.

He last played professionally in 2022 for Atlanta United, scoring four goals in 22 games before being waived at the end of the season. Dwyer trained with Sporting KC in 2023 but never was signed by the club.

A native of England, Dwyer, 33, received his green card in the USA and played four games for the USMNT, where he scored two goals.

“Adding a player to the mix with the pedigree of Dom is going to be a huge boost to the team and the locker room,” said Oakland Roots Head Coach Noah Delgado. “He comes to Oakland with experience at some of the highest levels of the game and gives us another dangerous goal scoring threat.”

The Roots are in need of some offensive help. Their starting forward line has only scored two goals in seven league games, courtesy of Johnny Rodriguez’s brace against El Paso Locomotive.

Oakland’s big offseason offensive signing, Miche-Naider Chéry, has been a bust so far. In 262 minutes over seven games, Chéry has had no shots on target. Trayvon Reid also attempted to fill in the attacking hole, but had only two attempts on goal in 238 minutes.

It was not announced if Dwyer will be in uniform for Oakland’s Saturday night home game against the Colorado Switchbacks.
