The 2022 season will be known as the end of the Matias Almeyda era and the prequel of Luchi Gonzalez’s tenure.

In between, it was mostly a season to forget for the San Jose Earthquakes faithful, with the Quakes finishing in last place in the MLS Western Conference.

One positive in San Jose’s final league game of the year was forward Jeremy Ebobisse scoring his 17th goal of the season. Cade Cowell added another in the second half to tie the Seattle Sounders 2-2 on the road.

Sunday also marked the end of Alex Covelo’s tenure as interim head coach after Almeyda parted ways with the Quakes after a disappointing start to the season.

“I think that these guys, this locker room, is very unique,” said Covelo. “They are very unified, and they are enjoying the way that we are playing. And at the same time, I cannot be more proud.”

“Alex [Covelo] and [Interm Assistant Coach] Luciano [Fusco] have a great demeanor of trying to help the guys,” noted midfielder Jackson Yuell. “Unfortunately, they weren’t helped out a lot throughout the year and struggled a little bit in a couple of unlucky balances, which kind of kept us off of MLS Playoffs. But I’m really happy that we were able to work with them.”

Next up in an offseason for Gonzalez to take charge and lead the Quakes back up the standings in 2023.
