Broncos’ Season Ends on a Rainy Night in Kentucky

Ninth-seeded Kentucky scored two goals off of set pieces in the first 10 minutes of the match to earn a 2-0 victory over visiting Santa Clara in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday night.

Lucca Rodrigues opened the scoring in the 5th minute. As Mason Visconti prepared to take a corner kick from the right side, Rodrigues was set up at the near post. He took a couple of steps to find space in between two Bronco defenders. The kick went straight to Rodrigues, who flicked the ball with his head so that it made its way across the goalmouth and settled just inside the far post.

Marcel Meinzer scored the second goal 5 minutes later on a header at the far post, nodding home another Visconti corner kick, as Stuiver rushed over to try and get in its way.

Kentucky held its opponent scoreless for the 12th time this season. Their defense held Santa Clara to 4 shots in the 90 minute match, none on target.

Stuiver had two saves, both coming in the 35th minute on a right-footed shot by Clay Holstad and rebound attempt by Brock Lindow.

The Broncos finish their season with a record of 12-2-4.
