The Santa Clara Broncos continued the defense of their NCAA title with a 2-1 victory over the Georgetown Hoyas in Washington D.C. on Friday afternoon.

Kelsey Turnbow opened the scoring for the Broncos in the 16th minute when she fired a shot from distance into the upper right corner of the net.

Georgetown quickly equalized in the 23rd minute off a corner kick.

From there the game was a slugfest through the rest of regulation and into overtime.

Eight minutes into the first overtime Santa Clara had a moment of brilliance to deliver the goal winner. Lucy Mitchell fed the ball to Kelsey Turnbow just on top of the penalty box. She turned and sprung the ball into the box for Izzy D’Aquila who ran onto the ball and slotted it past the Georgetown keeper.

“We’re excited to be moving on for sure,” said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith after the victory. “Georgetown at Georgetown is not an easy match.”

Wisconsin defeated UC Irvine in the other second-round match, setting up a third-round game on Sunday, with the winner advancing into the NCAA quarterfinals.

“Our game is a neutral game because we’re able to knock Georgetown out,” noted Smith. “I’m proud of our team and looking forward to the next match.”
