After a stellar debut in his rookie campaign, Quakes forward Cade Cowell has been selected to play in the MLS All-Star game later this month.

Cowell, only 17 years old, is the youngest player ever chosen to be an MLS All-Star. He has already compiled four goals and four assists this season. He has been selected to two MLS teams of the week and was once named league player of the week. This year, the rookie has also spent time training with the US Men’s National Team’s first side.

The MLS All-Star game will take place on August 25 in Los Angeles, facing off against some of Mexico’s best LIGA MX players.

Head coach Matias Almeyda surprised Cowell with the announcement during a team practice at PayPal Park in San Jose surrounded by his teammates.

The All-Star team is comprised of 28 players. Thirteen are selected by fans, thirteen by the team’s head coach LAFC’s Bob Bradley, and two by MLS commissioner Don Garber. Cowell was one of Garber’s picks, along with the New England Revolution’s Tajon Buchanan.

San Jose has a busy week on tap. They play the Portland Timbers on the road Wednesday night before returning home to play Los Angeles FC this Sunday.
