Oakland Roots keep Jordan Ferrell head coach, prepare for LA Galaxy II

As Oakland Roots head to Los Angeles to face off against Galaxy II this Sunday, the club announced Technical Director Jordan Ferrell will remain the team’s head coach for the rest of the 2021 season.

Ferrell will continue in his role as the club’s technical director as well.

“Coaching is what I love to do,” said Ferrell. “I am also all about building culture through football [soccer], and there is no better place to do that than in Oakland, where so many cultures come together in such a unique way.”

Ferrell has been with the Roots since they started in 2019. He was an assistant to head coach Paul Bravo during their first season. In 2020 he took over the head coach position and led the Roots to the championship game of the 2020 NISA tournament.

After the season ended, he moved into the Technical Director’s office and assistant head coach Dario Pot assumed the head coaching position.

Before starting this season, Pot and the Oakland Roots decided to mutually part ways after a difficult pre-season for the team.

“Jordan lives the Roots culture, and he had a fundamental role in building this season’s squad,” said Roots Chair Steven Aldrich. “This decision was made to minimize uncertainty for our players and keep the focus on winning matches.”

The club said they have already received numerous inquiries about the head coaching position and will name a new person in charge next year at the end of the current season.

Winning a match is the challenge ahead for the Roots players as they fly down to Los Angeles to face off against Galaxy II.

Los Angeles currently sits atop the Pacific Division standings with two wins, a loss, and two ties through five games. The Roots will attempt to blunt a powerful Galaxy attack with three players, Jorge Hernandez, Preston Judge, and Kai Koreniuk, having scored two goals. Defensively LA has been solid, racking up a +6 goal differential against their opponents.
